Human and environmental associates of local species-specific abundance in a multi-species deer assemblage

چکیده

Abstract Understanding how habitat, landscape context, and human disturbance influence local species-specific deer density provides evidence informing strategic management of increasing populations. Across an extensive (187 km 2 ) heterogeneous forest-mosaic in eastern England, spatially explicit surface models roe Capreolus capreolus introduced muntjac Muntiacus reevesi were calibrated by thermal imaging distance sampling (recording 1590 400 groups, respectively, on 567 driven transects). Models related to habitat composition, recreational intensity, (roe controlled for vice versa) at a grain across 1162 composite transect segments, incorporating geographical coordinates accounting spatial autocorrelation. Abundance both species was lower localities with more grasslands (inter-quartile, IQ, effect size: ?2.9 deer/km ; ). Roe abundance (mean = 7 , SD 6) greater young stands (IQ size, + 1.3 recreationists (?1.1 Muntjac 21 10) (+ 2.4 ), mature (? 46 years) 1.5 or calcareous soil 7.1 Comparison candidate variables comprising only shows be weak predictors densities. Adapting forest manipulate access may densities, but subtly: sizes are not sufficient mitigate impacts through planting vulnerable tree crops areas avoided deer. Effective culling remains the most viable option.

Influence of Prescribed Burning on Bird Abundance and Species Assemblage in a Semiarid Great Plains Grassland

—Encroachment of woody plants is widespread in semiarid grasslands of the southwestern United States. Wildlife responses to shrub removal techniques in the region are relatively unknown. In 2008 and 2009, we examined avian responses to prescribed burning of ungrazed shortgrass prairie within a study area (4811 ha) near Amarillo, Texas, that is heavily encroached by honey mesquite (Prosopis glan...

Geographical Range and Local Abundance of Tree Species in China

Most studies on the geographical distribution of species have utilized a few well-known taxa in Europe and North America, with little research in China and its wide range of climate and forest types. We assembled large datasets to quantify the geographic ranges of tree species in China and to test several biogeographic hypotheses: 1) whether locally abundant species tend to be geographically wi...

Hierarchical analysis of species distributions and abundance across environmental gradients.

Abiotic and biotic processes operate at multiple spatial and temporal scales to shape many ecological processes, including species distributions and demography. Current debate about the relative roles of niche-based and stochastic processes in shaping species distributions and community composition reflects, in part, the challenge of understanding how these processes interact across scales. Tra...

Abundance patterns in multi-species communities exposed to habitat destruction.

Habitat destruction resulting from human activity is a serious threat to biodiversity. The model developed by Tilman et al. [Tilman, D., May, R.M., Lehman, C.L., Nowak, M.A., 1994. Habitat destruction and the extinction debt. Nature 371, 65-66] has become an important tool for analyzing persistence of species in habitats under destruction. However, most analysis and applications of this model h...

The Shark Assemblage at French Frigate Shoals Atoll, Hawai‘i: Species Composition, Abundance and Habitat Use

Empirical data on the abundance and habitat preferences of coral reef top predators are needed to evaluate their ecological impacts and guide management decisions. We used longline surveys to quantify the shark assemblage at French Frigate Shoals (FFS) atoll from May to August 2009. Fishing effort consisted of 189 longline sets totaling 6,862 hook hours of soak time. A total of 221 sharks from ...
